Visa and the Olympic Games: Then and Now

So much change has occurred since Visa and the International Olympic Committee joined forces 31 years ago and those trends are fully evident today in South Korea, the home of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018

In 1986, Visa was one of the first corporations to join The Olympic Partnership (TOP). Since then, Visa has achieved explosive growth in a variety of ways, from the number of cards issued to the volume of purchase transactions made per year, among other figures. Below, take a look at how Visa has evolved since the partnership began.

With the world's population dramatically increasing its use of credit and debit comes the distinct possibility that we’re headed toward a cashless future. South Korea, the host country for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, has already pledged to become coinless by 2020, a potential precursor to a cashless society. In the meantime, as the chart below illustrates, South Korean customers today are more likely to use a credit or debit card to make a purchase than doing so with cash.
